Since I can seemingly never have enough new writing challenges to give myself, I’ve started yet another one. For this one, I will attempt to write a short review (a few hundred words or so) on every single record that ever hit the top spot of the pop charts. The reviews will follow the general format of the writing I’ve done for my Billboard Year-End Hot 100 Challenge, as well as the types of reviews I have written for One Random Single a Day. I won’t be writing about them in order, though – I have assigned a number to each record and I will use a randomizer to choose a stray number for me, which will then decide which track I am to write about that time. The goal is to eventually have a review written on every one of these songs or instrumentals… though given that there are well over 1,000 records that have accomplished this feat, even getting a sizable chunk of that finished would be quite a task on my part!
One thing I should note: unlike the challenge I’ve given myself for the year-end lists, these number-one singles aren’t going to be solely from years since the top 100’s conception. While the Hot 100 is something very particular to what we now know as pop music, Billboard actually began tracking and publishing record sales around 1940. For the next seventeen years afterwards, there existed a number of charts that announced the best performing recordings in physical sales, radioplay, and even jukebox popularity – until this was all combined in the universal chart that we know and love today. Ricky Nelson’s “Poor Little Fool” is often falsely reported as the very first number-one single in the country, but there were actually many more prior to this one.
Hence, every single listed below that fall between 1940 and 1957 are number-one hits that predate the existence of the Hot 100 – I hope to write about these songs as well, hence their inclusion. I do this mainly so I can try to fill in some gaps of my own, since my knowledge of pre-rock ‘n’ roll era music is sadly very lacking. Also, I already wrote about a few of these songs for my One Random Single A Day challenge and I’ve included those reviews here; unless my opinions on any of them have changed in any substantial way recently, I see no reason to write about them all over again.
One last thing: while every number-one single listed below are all in chronological order from when their peak position was hit and every section organized by the corresponding year, I’ve also put some numbers next to each year. This is mainly to help myself with organizing the songs based on their assigned number so I won’t have to do too much searching once the time comes for me to find the chosen track.
Phew! Alright, now, on we go!
