Rockin’ Thru the Aughts

Many refer to the first ten years of the new millennium, beginning in the year 2000, as “the aughts”. For myself, these were probably my most formative years. As the ball dropped on the new millennium, I was eight years old; in the summer of 2009, I was graduating high school and preparing for my first semester of college. Thus, it was during my middle and high school years when my exposure to music made the most radical turns. Specifically, I went from casually consuming whatever music happened to be playing around me – usually top 40 pop radio stuff – to avidly seeking out that which interested me the most in that particular time.

For me, it was rock radio that kickstarted my penchant toward other alternative forms of music. Growing up, I had little to no friends and found myself alone a whole lot of the time. I’m pretty certain that a lot of the themes and even just the general sound of rock music made me feel like it was okay to be alone – at the very least, there were others who were dealing with similar feelings that I often had trouble putting into words.

But I won’t go into too much detail about that. This next project I’m working on is called Rockin’ Thru the Aughts and it’s pretty much what it sounds like. Essentially it’s a love letter of sorts to the decade in rock music I listened to. I will be reviewing albums and any album is up for grabs so long as they follow three criteria: (1) they have to have been released sometime between 2000 and 2009, not any sooner or later; (2) they must be within some rock genre or subgenre (metal, pop-punk, post-hardcore, etc); and (3) at least one track in the album must have been in my own personal music library sometime in middle & high school. I will be covering these albums roughly in chronological order, and will mainly focus on a batch of albums that will be covered hopefully every week or so.

Since I listened to a lot of music during this time, this is a pretty huge undertaking. I already have around 1,000 albums waiting to be played and reviewed – and I’m pretty sure I’m just scratching the surface! I have a lot more to say, but from this point on, I’ll let my reviews do the talking.
